The methods and practices of Yoga offer innumerable gifts to humanity.
Digging for these gifts in our previous post we saw that the first noticeable benefit will be through the practice and mastery of Asanas or Yogic postures.
Although Yogasanas are not mere physical stretches or exercises, their therapeutic effects on the muscles and joints cannot be overlooked!! Recovery of the muscles and joints from strenuous physical situations as well as the dangers of sedentary work and life style is one of the first visible effects.
Even the preparatory work leading up to the actual practice of Asanas is able to provide relief and recovery from such physical stresses.
The practice of Asanas works at many levels. They have been evolved over centuries so as to exercise every muscle, nerve and gland in the body.
The yogic body becomes strong, supple and flexible and at the same time light and disease free.
Asana practice also removes fatigue, strengthens and soothes the nervous system and the endocrine system.
And while many of these benefits could be found in practitioners of various forms of sport and performing arts, in different proportions, yogic practices are wholly designed to bring harmony and stillness in the mind, senses, intellect and the Self , rendering a holistic personality and life.
Yoga can become the foundation of a person's career and personal life.
Proper asana practice creates physical as well as mental Stability, Flexibility, Awareness, Acceptance, Resilience, Consistency and importantly - Proactivity.
Thus the yogi is in a position to pursue excellence , balance and happiness.
The Yogic body , now being a fit vehicle to carry the spirit within, becomes ready for more subtle work on the vital energies of the body. The state of mind and body health achieved through Asana is now deepened through the practice of Prānāyāma - the expansion and channelisation of the vital life energies flowing subtly through our body.
Pranayama is done through the structured practice of controlling the breath, thereby expanding the consciousness. The powerful states of stillness of mind, lasting peace and joy are the results of this practice. The subtle manipulations of our vital energies has also been known to attract finer intelligence, youthfulness, wealth and prosperity.
Thus the Yogi in their journey to Spiritual realisation, Samādhi or Raja yoga, is showered with the gifts of true health and happiness. And then it becomes the responsibility of the Yogi to stay on the path!
